Authentication failed when syncing with IMAP

Greetings,

I have been trying to setup isync/mbsync to sync my malbox.org account locally using IMAP. No matter what authentication/SSL settings I use, I get "Authentication failed".

I have confirmed that this is not an issue of incorrect credentials, as the error changes to "Authentication failed - incorrect credentials" when I deliberately use the incorrect password.

I have seen several other topics where the problem was that the login was being blocked incorrectly by the anti-abuse system. Perhaps this is the case here?

I have managed to solve the problem. Details below in case it helps anybody in the future:

For my other accounts, I was using PassCmd "gpg2 ..." to decrypt my password to pass to the server. While this works for email accounts on Gmail and outlook, for mailbox.org, I am required to wrap the PassCmd in the following: echo ${PASSWORD:-$(gpg2 ...)}. The server will then accept it. The same applies for msmtprc and passwordeval.
