I'm a long-time user of yubikey and I own several. I was wondering if your yubikeys that you order to yubico were different from the generic yubikey 4 ?
still no answer?
As far as I know, the difference is that if you buy a Yubikey from mailbox.org it's preconfigured for your account and authenticats against mailbox.org's own key-servers instead of the Yubikey cloud. Otherwise they're technically the same and also can be used for accounts of other providers.

Well I didn't make a lot of research about it but I always bought keys from yubico for a long time now, and to me the yubikey has never been something related to yubico servers. Even the serial numbers are not related to any order numbers.
"Read more about why YubiKey beats other methods on our blog post. * No cryptographic secrets stored or hosted by vendor. Yubico offers an optional authentication service, YubiCloud, for hosting OTP secrets."
that's quote from yubico itself.
proof is that keepass which is a total on-site password manager without any connection to outside world use yubikey .
for login to a program or a service, you or the service provider need to install the yubico framework which contains an algorithm of Q&A kind. But without any connection to yubicloud. If a corporation wants yubicloud that's an optional service but not accessible when you only buy yubikeys....
yubikey is normally and always has been an on-site solution for on-site application provided by on-site servers.
