Redirecting to external email address gives a loop error

Hi!

I’m trying to setup forwarding of emails to external accounts, but I can’t get this to work.

I am using my custom domain (let's call it mycustomdomain.com) for my Mailbox.org account, and both the mail email address and aliases are working fine.

But I also want to redirect some other email addresses on mycustomdomain.com to other external email addresses. I have set up forwarding by going to Settings -> Email -> Filter rules. Here I have added a new rule which says:

  • Conditions: Any recipient contains user1@mycustomdomain.com
  • Actions: Redirect to firstname.lastname@gmail.com
  • (Don’t process subsequent rules)

However, if I send an email to user1@mycustomdomain.com it bounces with the error:

<user1@mycustomdomain.com>: mail for mycustomdomain.com loops back to myself

There aren't any rules at gmail.com which forwards emails back. And if I check the email source/headers of the bounced mail, it doesn't seem like it ever tries to actually send the email to the gmail.com-account.

I can’t understand why this is happening. Any ideas?

If you want to forward AND keep, you must use the "keep" action as a second result in your ruleset. Have a look into the action-dropdown.

Which server send that message?

And: Please open an individual support ticket including mailbox.org account AND the remote destination mailaddress.

Hi, was there a solution to this? I am having the same problem with 2 aliases that I want to forward to external addresses.

Hello Everyone,

I'm questioning whether the Redirect To email filter is indeed for automatically forwarding emails to another external email. I say this because, when I create such a filter and test it, I find I never receive the incoming email nor does that email get forwarded elsewhere.

Thanks for your feedback!

I think the redirect to is not forwarding. It actually deletes your email. Honestly it kinda sucks there is not way to forward. I almost feel this is expect...

Redirect is to forward the e-mail and (for sure) it works. every day for thousands of users.

If you don't receive that e-mail at the destination mailbox, then there's something wrong on the destination side OR the rule didn't match.

Hi @peer as the other uses says redirect actually forwards AND deletes, this is undesireable in most cases. I happen to have an email as a notification that I would like to forward to my wife as well automatically server side. This redirect action labels my email as deleted and i can view it on any other IMAP client.

I did that before. I will try again and circle back with what comes out. I have a rule setup already with redirect first then keep. Do you know if keep is suppose to be first?

Ok it works! I specifically did redirect action first THEN keep action. For everyone in the future.
