DNS settings for individual accounts: what's the TXT format

Martynas Klimas shared this problem 32 days ago

The instructions for Step 2 tell me to made a TXT record in the DNS settings and

  1. Add a "Hostname" entry containing the first part of the key (6) (see Figure 2).
  2. Create a "Target" entry and insert the second part of the key (7) (see Figure 2).

How is this supposed to look like? Do I have to make two DNS entries? Is "Hostname" supposed to be the name of one entry and "Target" of the second?

And which part of the key is second part? Does the IN TXT bit count or not?

When you try to create an alias for your custom domain the page will show you what the TXT record should look like. An example here: https://kb.mailbox.org/static/en_mbo_neu/115650081.png

And there are some examples in their KB.

The TXT is the record type that you have to select.

I may notice that I copied and pasted from the Mailbox org KB, so I presumably had seen the image you linked.

It is somewhat clearer in that the first line is the first part of the key and that IN TXT is part of the second part.

Looking at the Cloudflare KB, I can now assume that only a single TXT-type DNS entry is needed, with two lines "Hostname=[first code part] Target=[second code part]"

I'll try that now, and hope it works. But this mailbox KB hasn't been the clearest in this regard, up and including the [6] and [7] which I assume are remnants from a previous version that had figures with marked features:

Add a "Hostname" entry containing the first part of the key (6) (see Figure 2).
Create a "Target" entry and insert the second part of the key (7) (see Figure 2).

Well, I've tried:

Using Hostname/Target as titles for the DNS TXT record and entering the values in the text
I've tried entering the values in a single DNS record and in two separate ones
I've tried entering "Hostname=key1 Target=key2"
I've tried entering "Hostname=key1 Target=IN TXT key2"

None of it works.

This is a very annoying start.

A Cloudflare user resolved it within 20 minutes.

You should really clear up the instructions in the support section because I would have never read

Add a "Hostname" entry containing the first part of the key (6) (see Figure 2).
Create a "Target" entry and insert the second part of the key (7) (see Figure 2).
To mean "name the TXT record with the first part of the key and then add the part after IN TXT as the contents"
