custom domain setup during trial period

I'm still in my trial period and I tried to set up my custom domain, but it's still telling me that validation failed. Is it not possible to use a custom domain during the trial period, and it will work once I start paying? Or is there another issue that would potentially prevent me from using my custom domain at all?

A lot of users fail to set the record properly. Have you used tools like host/nslookup/drill/dig to see if the record is resolvable and correct? If this feature is not available in trial period they should disable it or display a warning.
