Why does a non-EU resident have to pay VAT?

Need Answer

I've sent this question to customer support two weeks ago - no response. Maybe someone here can at least clarify the issue?

I'm not an EU resident. Don't live anywhere near Europe. When I signed up for the Standard plan I received an invoice showing that I've been charged German value-added tax (VAT). Shouldn't I be exempt from this tax?

Is that an answer to my question? It seems to talk about residents of other EU members. I am not in the EU, and where I live, there is no VAT either.

Obviously not. I am not a tax expert. :-) This is a user forum and I am just an ordinary user.

I have received two contradictory answers from customer support now. One said to make sure my country of residence in the Personal Data settings is set correctly. This would result in the tax being dropped at the next monthly charge. Pretty sure I set the country correctly before even signing up for the paid plan. Could be wrong though. Will see when the next charge comes.

The other response, from a different person, said that tax exemptions can only be extended to businesses outside the EU, not private customers. And that in the case of businesses, proof must be received that the business is registered outside the EU for tax purposes.

So.. answers, yes - clarity, not yet!
