Upon request, I have removed and added the account again.

Here is the request: "Our Administrators checke the logfiles and found that the authentication for the account in Apple Mail is not working properly. That can be different reasons for that. It could be that the other SMTP-server that you have in your settings is the reason. Could you delete the profile completely and set it up from scratch without the other SMTP-server?".

Here is my reply: "I have removed the account and added it again. The other SMTP server is mentioned (as ‘off’) by default because it is used by another account. If I check the other account, I see the same with the SMTP of mailbox.org. I think that should be known by your administrator... Now it seems working while nothing changed system setting wise. Any ideas about that? Don’t get me wrong: It is nice it seems to work now but is not nice we do not know why it did not work and why it suddenly works now."

So remove and add (including the tip of Niklas) could result in a working situation but so far we do not know why...
