Cryptocurrency as a Payment Method

In shared this idea 2 years ago
Proposed

Presently, my only gripe with the mailbox.org service is that there is no way to pay with Cryptocurrency. Many users of mailbox.org are here because the service provided is a much more private alternative to the bigger email providers, and supporting Cryptocurrency falls perfectly inline with that use case, as it can be a much more private way of purchasing goods.

While I commend the option of paying with cash by mail. There are many reasons why customers might prefer to pay with Cryptocurrency.

Please consider making Cryptocurrency an available payment method, thank you.

I've been looking for weeks and haven't found a single one that implements the "orange check" idea.

Meaning one can pay with bitcoin at sign-up. There's some like protonmail, tuta and others that require one to dox oneself / do their KYC at sign-up and only after they've grabbed your private info they'll allow bitcoin payments.

Have literally not found a single company that wants to take my bitcoin in exchange for an email address and service. Why?

Seems like a great opportunity for a company to offer. You'd be the only one that does as far as I know.

I suspect governments don't allow companies to implement this business model. Sad state of affairs :(

Hopefully some real cypherpunks soon offer an email service online that doesn't require clients to dox themselves.

Would something like a coingate integration suffice?

Monero (XMR) crypto currency payment option would be great for mailbox.org service. Monero offers financial transaction privacy that people expect from digital payments, by default, to all its users. It works analogous to physical cash, in the sense that, you cannot see the past transactions of the payee, nor the payer. Bitcoin, on the other hand, doesn't provide such, default, financial privacy to its users. Also, Monero's transaction fees are cheap, and its confirmation times are fast, making Monero a great way to pay for digital services.

Where there is no will, there is no way.

This would be quite a good idea if the right infrastructure can be setup. Privacyguides do mention having support for paying in crypto as a best case for Privacy https://www.privacyguides.org/en/email/#privacy

Hi,

thank you for your postings. Currently we are not planning on implementing a payment method for cryptocurrencies. We offered this a couple of years ago, but the vendor we worked with closed and we did not have a lot of customers who asked for this service. Of course I will forward this as a feature request to our product management team.

With kind regards

No plans to give customers what they're asking for or implement industry best practices. Okay. So what specific next steps need to happen within mailbox to implement cryptocurrency payment support? "Forward this as a feature request to our product management team" reads "kick the can down the road." What does the product management team need to KNOW and DO in order to make this change sooner rather than later?
