Does a message copy take up additional storage?

When I create a filter rule that uses "Copy into", does each copy of a message count towards the storage usage, or does it work more like a symlink, where only a single copy is stored and it is referenced from multiple folders? Is this different when I use IMAP COPY?

I think it makes totally sense to have a second file when you copy (instead of a symlink). This way, when you accidentally delete one email, you would still have access to the copy!
