Delay or disable marking read

I would like to see a way of preventing unread mails from automatically marking unread mails as read when they're selected; either altogether or with a delay (selected for a few seconds before marked as read).

The issue I'm having is that when an unread mail is selected unintentionally, for instance when deleting the mail above or below, the mail is immediate marked as read. This is undesirable.
