Thunderbird fails to login to SMTP server

when I try to send an email from Thunderbird, login to SMTP settings fails.
I am using the settings from https://kb.mailbox.org/en/private/faq-article/setup-other-e-mail-clients-manually/ (see smtp_settings.png)
The failure message is "Login to server smtp.mailbox.org with username alifeee@alifeee.net failed"
it has worked in the past, and I haven't changed the settings, so I don't know what's wrong.
I have also tried switching to the alternative SMTP settings, with no luck.
I am sure that I am typing/pasting the correct password. I have also tried deleting and re-adding the account to Thunderbird.
No connection
