Can't get ActiveSync working on Android (12)

I have the following fields:

  • Email: me@myemail.com
  • Password: my login 2.0 password OR my email app password (Tried both)
  • Domain\Username: myemail.com\me
  • Server: office.mailbox.org
  • Port: 443
  • Security type: SSL/TLS

I have tried following: https://kb.mailbox.org/en/private/e-mail-article/activesync-on-android-devices and I can't get it connected, with it always telling me invalid credentials.

If anybody could sanity check the details I need to enter, I'd really appreciate it. I deleted my (working) connection to replace it with my login 2.0 method, assuming my old login would be deprecated and I thought I'd do it now, but it's just been a bad day of fumbling with no success unfortunately.

Forget it: EAS doesn't work with Login 2.0 and app/e-mail passwords. Clown computing.

That's terrible if that's the case.

There is a four month old thread in the German forum here:
https://userforum.mailbox.org/topic/9641-active-sync-in-kombination-mit-2fa-funktioniert-nicht

And their usual response: Soon :-)

Does it work with the standard password if you disable 2FA?

That's a fantastic question, and yes it does.

I disabled my two-factor authentication and used my regular account password and I was able to setup Mailbox as an "Exchange" type with calendar, email and contact syncing.

Terrible that disabling two-factor authentication is the solution though.

I just found this out as well. EAS doesn't work with 2-factor enabled. This is a pretty big oversight.

I've been considering moving away from mailbox.org anyway due to some other issues I've been having, so this might be the (very heavy) straw that breaks the camels back.

Meanwhile EAS should work when 2FA is enabled. You have to create an app password for Exchange ActiveSync. I am not a fan of it and have tested it only on iOS.

Unfortunately, it does not. As soon as I add 2FA, EAS stops working. I go into settings and create an application password, but it only seems to work for the *DAV protocols. Exchange Activesync is not working. None of my EAS clients can connect until I disable 2FA and use the main account password.

IMAP/SMTP app passwords work through.

So I just put the german thread posted above into google translate (I don't understand german). Apparently, I have to change the client server setting to app.mailbox.org from office.mailbox.org when using application passwords. The english knowledge-base article for exchange activesync specifically says to use office.mailbox.org and says nothing about switching to app.mailbox.org when using an application password.

I now have 2FA working with EAS
