Alternative senders with custom domain

Need Answer

Hi,

I've successfully setup my custom domain to work operate as "catch-all". I can receive email to any addresses of my domain. What I would like now is to select one of these addresses when composing an email just to not expose my main mailbox address. I'm not sure where this needs to be configured, but the "From:" field when composing is fixed and not allowing me to input a random custom domain address. There are two options under "Email addresses" configuration. One is add external alias, but I do not want to create one each time I want to send a different custom outgoing address. Then there is "Alternative Senders" but I'm not fully understanding if that's what I need as it seems that it generates an activation link, and don't get what the use case for this setup.

Is there a way I can freely choose a custom domain outgoing address when composing an email on the fly? If so, where do I need to configure this setting?

Thanks in advance,

Lucas.

I think you have to create at least two entries in "Aliases with custom domains":

@example.com - receive e-mails for whatever@example.com
alias1@example.com - alias you also want to send from ... I think this is only needed if you use the mailbox suite. In Thunderbird I could use the alias without creating it.

mailbox probably should improve their documentation and ui. There is obviously no other way to add identities in the mailbox suite.

I guess if you want to send an e-mail from an alias you have to create it first.

Hi @zapata,

Thanks for your reply. That's what I don't understand. For example when configuring the "catch-all" setup I only needed to add "@customdomain.com" under "Aliases with custom domains" but when attempting the same rule for "Add external alias" it is not possible to set it to "@customdomain.com". So to sum up: Mailbox does allow me to "catch-all" on reception but a similar setup does not work for outgoing mail aliases, why? I was expecting this to work both ways. It is really annoying to have to setup up each outgoing address prior writing an email.

Hi once again @zapata

Thanks for the insight about Thunderbird. Hope I get a bit of time to test it soon. In the meantime I've already opened a ticket referencing this thread just to have an official response from MailBox. It could be possible as you mention that this issue is exclusively related to the MailBox web interface.

Thanks for yout time,

Lucas.

Hello,

thank you for your posting and for your comments. You can use any email address with a catch-all address if you do so with an external email client such as Thunderbird. There, you do not need to create an alias; you can simply enter the desired email address in the “From” field. This is not possible in the mailbox web client. Here you need to create an alias in order to send with it.

If you have any further questions regarding this topic, please get in touch.

With kind regards

Your mailbox team
