Is there a way to stop birthday reminders showing up every day for weeks?

I get a red dot in the Reminders area (the bell-shaped icon) every day for at least two weeks prior to a birthday in the Birthdays calendar that has populated from my Contacts, and there seems to be no way to clear it or stop it recurring every day. One reminder the day before or day of is plenty. Is there a way to adjust this or just turn it off that anyone has found?
