Clean up folder - what does it do?

If I right-click a folder the context menu shows a "Clean up" option. What is this option actually supposed to do? Seemingly for me it does nothing at all, at least makes no change in the folder's contents.

depending on your configuration, this option deletes email messages from mailbox Office that you have previously deleted in another email client without signing out.
