Not sure what causes this annoying (unchanged) credentials aren't valid.[/li]

  • Using the web frontend again to change my password to a new one, and back to the old one, fixes the issue, and Thunderbird can pull the mails, again: configuration unchanged, still using the old password.
  • [/ul]What might be the problem here?

I'm having the same problem. Hoping to hear back from support on this.

Thunderbird Desktop (for Windows) is no longer accepting the primary password for Mailbox.org. This feature was working before, and I suspect the problem has something to do with the introduction of email app passwords. I changed my main/primary Mailbox password to see if that would fix it, and the problem still remains. I am unable to access my Mailbox.org email, calendar, and tasks on Thunderbird as of the time of this writing.

I wrote in earlier to the team about my concerns regarding this being a possibility. I was worried that forcing users to use email app passwords for third party applications would nuke Thunderbird for desktop's functionality (ie, syncing EVERYTHING - email, calendar, tasks, etc). Thunderbird mobile works fine with email app passwords, as that application doesn't have contacts, calendar, etc syncing capability. But the desktop version does.

If (and I haven't tested this) the only way to access Mailbox.org using Thunderbird desktop is to create an email app password for it, then how will users be able to access the other (non-email) syncing features of Thunderbird desktop?

Update: I was able to sync Thunderbird desktop with Mailbox.org by creating a new, unique email app password for IMAP, and creating a new, unique Application Password for CalDAV/CardDAV. While this is admittedly more secure than using my main password (and I prefer it), I'm not sure why there wasn't notice given that the main password would no longer work, and I don't know if the support documentation has been updated to reflect this change. In addition, it appears the only way to access Thunderbird's XMPP chat integration is by entering the main password (which does work, but seems to negate the security benefits of NOT using it for email, calendar, contacts, and tasks).

Lucky you. App passwords are not yet available for my account, and the problematic behavior persists.

Is Login 2.0 already enabled for your account?

    See https://kb.mailbox.org/en/private/account-article/how-to-use-two-factor-authentication-2fa

Have you tried to create app passwords for CardDAV (contacts), CalDAV (calendar) and Webdav/OX Drive (Files)?

    No it isn't, and no, I haven't.
