After each login via the Web frontend, Thunderbird is blocked from access

Not sure what causes this annoying /p>
- on one of my accounts, logging in via the web frontend causes subsequent access via Thunderbird to block, saying the (unchanged) credentials aren't valid.
- Using the web frontend again to change my password to a new one, and back to the old one, fixes the issue, and Thunderbird can pull the mails, again: configuration unchanged, still using the old password.
What might be the problem here?
Access denied
No connection
Real-time notifications may not work
