i continue to receive emails sent to deleted alias

I no longer wish to receive emails sent to an alias. So I deleted it. However, I continue to receive emails sent to it even though it doesn't appear as part of my alias'.
I've read the faq. It doesn't help. They still slip in
The same problem 
No connection
Real-time notifications may not work
