Can someone guide me to merge two accounts into a family account?

I have read this page:

However, I fear that I don’t understand it correctly. What I read is that the user that you will want to link to the created family account has to liberate the principal address. But, such action is blacklisting the address for 365 days if I am correct.

I must admit that when I joined mailbox.org I did not see we could split the bills. So we created 2 accounts. But I wanted to share one alias between us. However, I realize that it seems impossible outside family account.

However, I don’t know how to "merge" our two accounts. Both accounts have active subscription.


On the page I quoted, they say:

  • Create a new alias and set it as the new primary address of your account.
  • Then remove the previous primary alias — that is, the email address you now wish to use within the team or family account.

But, as I said before, removing the alias, will blacklist it for 365 days. Do I miss something here?

Ok finally we succeeded with the help of the support.


How to do it:

- In the account you want to merge

1.) Put any alias as your main address (note the email as when you do it, Mailbox will make you log out of your account and you need to reconnect)

2.) Delete the alias that you will use as main address after the merge

3.) Unblock the alias you have deleted

- Log into the main account for the family

4.) Go to the family tab. Add this alias. You need to enter the first name, last name and choose a password

- Contact Support

5.) Last step, you need to contact support to ask them to transfert the remaining time of your old account to the merged one

Process finished, you have a family account. Enjoy the shared folders etc.

How to unblock deleted aliases is described in the KB article you linked:

Unfortunately, this process at Mailbox has not improved for many years.

Ok.

I understand now. So, in other words, there is no real possibility to link two accounts as the same family without nuking one account and purchase again a subscription.

This is seriously a bad process, especially when you compare competitors.

Don’t know what to do... I do not think my wife would like the process.... especially buying a new subscription few weeks after subscribing :(

You are totally right in all you say with the confusion of merging/creating a family account. If I understand well it is the fact that I purchased the other account for a family member before the merging which complicates things. I went back and forth with email support but it was like two hard-hearings trying to hear each other. Maybe it was about the German/English thing, not sure. I gave up and truly regret buying another account that I have not used in months because it does not achieve what I read it would.

I am currently trying to do it... I succeeded to merge the old account into the family "account".

It seems that the support can transfert the remaining period of time from the "old" account to the new account.

Now I just need they unlock the new account... as I cannot log into with correct login and password. Sent again an email to support.

This process is over complicated. But at the end, I think it will work... You just loose several days in the process.

EDIT: it sems that the receiving email works... this is just the login to the platform that doesn’t work at all. So, even if I would like to pay for the merged account, I could not.

New, old, unlock, login, aliases... It's more than over complicated. I bought the account 6 months ago, never used it. Support was useless for me. I wasted too much money and time on this.

I have my account and there is the other account that I whish to merge as a Family account. I have access to both.

When you say: "the account you want to merge", is it my account or the other account?

This is the account you want to merge with the other account that will manage the family account.

So you created account_1 and account_2 without a family account. You want to add account_2 to account_1.

You go into account_2, change the main address with any alias (I used an alias like old_account_to_delete). You delete the alias you want to use. You unblock it.

Then you switch to the account_1. Go to family account tab. And add here the alias you wanted to retrieve on the family tab. Let’s call it, now, account_3.

Then you need to contact support to transfert the remaining time of account_2 to the new account (account_3).

I have done all those steps before along with the dozens of email exchanges with support. However, the very last step you mention was never brought up, leaving me in total confusion (and frustration).

Here I go again ... 3... 2... 1... Fingers crossed!

I will contact support for the last step.

I understand account_3 is created as I add it to the Family tab from my account. But when and how do I login to account_3 that technically does not exist? Before or after the time remaining was transferred?

Once you created it in the family account page... the account exists.

You create it literraly here:

Sidenote: When I have done it, I have encountered a bug and could not log into the account. Something that was solved by support also in few hours. I don’t say you will run into same bug, but just wanted to report it if you get it.

Login in now it says "Email already exists"... I have seen this before... I am truly going in circles...

Absolutely nothing is obvious about the Family account.

This is the exact bug I have got.

Support can fix that AND transfert the remaining time AT SAME TIME. Contact them

You are at few hours (because of the current time of the day) to be able to use the family account.

How do I tell the Family account is successful? What should be different and obvious in the user interface of either account? So far I don't see anything different :(

You should be able to share things (folder,s, calendar etc.)
